Maybe it’s time to talk about the hidden selfishness that comes with playing the “hero” or being a high performer. We assume everyone around us has the same engine, the same hunger, the same willingness to push past limits and see pain as a detonator of potential. And when they don't keep pace, the gap feels personal — like betrayal.

I hate to break the myth that the purpose of life is self-improvement, but research on motivation shows it’s deeply personal and context-dependent. Ash Ali and Hasan Kubba, in The Unfair Advantage, call this “personal leverage”: the unique conditions that give each person an edge — background, personality, network, timing, skills, mindset, or even financial situation.

This means:

You don’t always succeed because you’re more ambitious than others — often, it’s because certain conditions align with your strengths. Expecting others to share your drive is a recipe for resentment and disappointment. Mark Ellison, in How to Build Impossible Things, writes about creating “systems that expand human capacity” but also warns about the invisible friction between visionaries and the rest of the world:

“You can ignite a movement, but you cannot force every participant to burn at the same temperature.”

The metaphor is simple, but the reality is subtle: your fire fuels your own journey. Some people warm themselves at the same hearth, some at a different one, and some do not seek fire at all — they gather light from a distant sun, and that is okay.

The Capacity Gap

Albert Rutherford, in Tools of System Thinkers, describes the “capacity gap”: the space between potential and execution that is unique to each individual. Some people are wired to sprint; others to pace themselves. Expecting another person to operate at your speed is like expecting the sun to rise at the same angle for every city on earth — it doesn’t work that way, and it’s not wrong when it doesn’t.

Moya Sarner, in When I Grow Up, highlights how upbringing, exposure, and personal purpose shape ambition. Some will embrace relentless hustle; others will thrive in stability, creativity, or slow mastery — and none of these paths is wrong.

But your reaction tells you everything about yourself: when you feel frustrated with others’ pace, it reveals your intolerance for unpredictability, your need for control, and sometimes your own fear that you lose momentum, which will perpetuate your loneliness and lack of satisfaction.

The Ambition Blind Spot

Ambition is relative. Too often, people assume they are ambitious simply because they are the most energetic in their immediate circle. But being the fastest runner in a slow race does not make you an Olympic athlete. This false sense of superiority creates blind spots. We compare ourselves downward and conclude we are exceptional, while in truth, we might only be marginally above average. Real ambition is not measured against the crowd but against your own capacity, endurance, and consistent output over time.

The rarest performers are those whose drive persists independently of context — and even their fire, however, is shaped by circumstance: some environments energize, others drain. If your ambition fuels you rather than depletes you, you live a biased reality: what burns others out fuels you. The long hours, the lack of rest, the pain treated as a challenge, the relentless pursuit of “more” — none of it feels like sacrifice; it feels like oxygen. And because your addiction is fast growth, it’s easy to slip into judgment: if I did it with so little, why can’t they thrive with so much more?

But research reminds us that true high performance is uncommon.

Only about 15–20% of people consistently qualify as highly ambitious or high performers. In a group of seven, you might be the only one.

The other six are not “lesser” — they are wired differently. Some find joy in stability, others in creativity, and still others in the slow mastery of a skill. Ambition isn’t absent; it simply expresses itself in ways that may not look like yours.

Immunity to burnout

There’s a shadow side: high ambition correlates with higher rates of burnout. A 2019 study in Frontiers in Psychology found that individuals with “overstriving ambition” — relentless pursuit without rest, reflection, or emotional support — reported significantly higher stress, fatigue, and lower life satisfaction.

Similarly, the World Health Organization highlights burnout as “chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed” — often driven by unregulated ambition.

The paradox is clear: ambition expands capacity, but unexamined ambition depletes it.

Overstrivers (driven by insecurity, fear, or comparison) are far more prone to burnout.
Obsessive high performers (fueled by purpose, harmonious passion) are less prone - sometimes almost immune - because they draw energy from their drive rather than being drained by it.

This is why forcing someone else to “keep up with your fire” is not just unfair; it’s dangerous. What fuels you may exhaust them. By imposing your rhythm, you don’t create another high performer — you risk creating another overstriver, sprinting from fear, not inspiration.

Ambition isn’t transferable. It’s a choice each person must make, and a pace they must discover.

Adjust expectations, not velocity. Misalignment isn’t failure; it’s difference.
Delegate strategically. Let others shine where their strengths lie. Leadership is designing a course where each runner thrives.
Practice patience. Resisting the urge to push, give solutions, or fix others strengthens emotional intelligence.
Encourage autonomy. Motivation from within is stronger than motivation imposed externally. Ask: What energizes them?
Find complementary energy. Some people ground your vision, some spark new ideas, some hold space. A diverse group is resilient.

There’s a quiet freedom in letting others walk their own path at their own pace — it shields you from frustration and opens a space where growth can flourish, not under your shadow, but in the light beside yours.
