My father shaped much of my resilience, though not always in kind ways. His greatest love was alcohol, and in his romanticism, he sacrificed his life for it. My parents divorced early, and I quickly learned to separate the identity of a flawed parent from the genuine human being behind it — a skill that helped me reframe parenting as guidance rather than authority.

The Healed Roots of Self-Worth

Around age twelve, I stopped taking calls after 10 a.m. from him because he was always drunk — the anticipation of his voice made my stomach twist while my body was discovering new temperature measurements for rage. Each conversation was a strange trial: I’d be humiliated, belittled, or insulted until I cried and hung up. That was the finish line, the only way to end a “training” session. For him, it was a test — proof of whether I could endure pressure without collapsing. Later, he would brag about my “strong character” to others.

The first stage is running for approval. But with time, the wheels turn — and you learn to stand so firmly in your own identity that no hateful words can bend your decisions.

Fast forward to our last conversation before he died: I was told life is divided among winners, survivors, and losers, and I was warned to have my last name removed because I was THE loser. These days, it’s trending to call it “traumatic,” but these were monumental encounters in building mental strength: learning to find lessons in discomfort and pain, using emotion as fuel rather than letting it anchor me, and allowing it to bring the best out of me.

The barriers you feel are intended to teach you.

The Paradox of Ambition

Ambition has been in me for as long as I can remember — either my parents planted a seed of potential and nurtured my illusion that I could do everything, or maybe I just entered the world overdosed on enthusiasm for depth. There are stories of me as a toddler, encouraging other kids to get up when they fell and keep trying, as if persistence were something I could already lend. Until adulthood, it never occurred to me that something so soul-electrifying could be perceived as a weapon.

What do you mean, “weapon”? It started with being asked by university colleagues, “Why are you trying so hard?” Going even further back, I was presented in front of my high school class as a future failure by the principal, who told me:

“You might be intelligent and have charisma, but you tend to get fat, so you won’t get far in life.”

I first stopped complaining about period cramps and pain in tenth grade, when my deskmate said, “I thought women are tougher than men — why are you complaining?” This memory came back to me yesterday, as I argued with a colleague. I was lutealing hard and trying not to cry, but I felt that tears would drown my argument, and I would be called oversensitive — a mechanism still at work ten years later. That’s when I began reflecting.

Different people hold different heights of vision, and aging in the pursuit of comfort is a valid way of living. Yet a tendency noted in men is that ambition for purpose rather than profit feels dangerous, triggering the savior instinct, as if I am meant to be guided or saved.

Navigating this tension requires what neuroscience calls limbic vigilance — a scanning of the room, reading faces, anticipating judgment. Chronic stress, like gendered pushback, activates the HPA axis, the body’s stress system. In excess, it harms; in moderation, it forges. Neural pathways adapt, sharpening problem-solving, empathy, and emotional intelligence. Resilience, then, is not born from ease but from friction — what weighs you down also builds the muscle to carry you forward.

So, according to the definition, I seem to be well… mentally.

Resilience isn’t just grit — it’s a combination of neurobiology and psychology.

Women show greater activation in limbic areas (insula, cingulate, ventral striatum), linked to emotional awareness and social processing, which increases vigilance but also strengthens relational resilience. Translating setbacks into purpose engages prefrontal circuits, reducing stress reactivity and improving coping.
In Southeastern Europe, 31–35% of women report anxiety or depression, reflecting structural pressures and historical trauma. Yet studies of post-conflict communities reveal extraordinary resilience: women leading businesses, caregiving networks, and civic rebuilding.

Psychologists call this adversarial growth: resilience forged through chronic challenges, quietly shaping strength that holds even when unseen.

Sisterhood as Medicine

True sisterhood is alchemy. It’s the company of honest women who make space instead of noise, who widen perspective instead of competing, who hold doors open instead of guarding them. Their presence reminds you: another woman’s success is not a threat to your own, but a celebration you are invited to share.

It is rare, because it comes with cleansing you may not be ready for — the mirror held to your blind spots, insecurities, and “not-enoughness.” But that too is medicine: the healing of witnessing without needing to compete, of absorbing inspiration instead of comparison.

I think of the soulmates I never applauded, too entangled in the clutter of my own head. Yet with the right women, you surrender. You allow yourself to be nurtured, reflected, multiplied.

The Ambitious Woman as a Trophy to Be unLEGOed

I’d love for someone to deny it — I’d pour my heart into a glass and stay for a cocktail, just to be proven wrong. But the conversation always circles back to the same obsession: singleness as deficiency, a void to be urgently filled.

“I want a woman like you, but with fewer dreams.”

You don’t need to be a surgeon to know that the resuscitation of a dream takes tremendous amounts of effort.

Ambition is celebrated only as long as it can be worn like an accessory — polished, contained, filling gaps that were never ours to fill. When it erupts untamed, it is recast as extremism, wielded as proof of supposed “not-enoughness.” That is the pretentious, unrealistic feminist dilemma: ambition is tolerated when it pleases, condemned when it threatens.

We shift towards beta partnerships — connections that are not meant to complete your life, but to complement. And whether or not we believe in God, we usually believe in its timing. I believe in a connection so deep that I could pour limitless rivers of love into a partner’s cup, while he ensures mine overflows too. Yet I’ve learned: I will never be enough for a man who is not enough for himself. Until his time comes, I have a world to change.
