We live in an age where healing is a currency. We know the language — trauma, triggers, boundaries — and we wear our self-awareness like badges. But have you stopped to ask: Is all this healing talk actually moving us forward? Or is it just keeping us safe from the one thing that actually grows us — discomfort?

Healing should be a bridge, not a destination. But somewhere along the way, healing became an excuse to stall. We confuse processing with progress. We pathologize the everyday aches of life, telling ourselves every hard moment is trauma. And we hide behind self-care routines that sometimes look more like fortresses than freedom.

When did ordinary discomfort become a diagnosis?

Somewhere along the way, discomfort became a pathology.
Heartbreak, rejection, uncertainty, grief - the very seasons that shape resilience - now get labeled as “toxic” or “traumatizing.” Something that our grandparents might have called “character-building” or “part of the deal” has been cast as an enemy that needs to be removed from, rather than a natural signal that something in us is adapting, stretching, growing.

Tim Grover, the performance coach behind Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant, puts it plainly: “Pressure is a privilege. It means there’s something worth protecting.” But in the wellness vocabulary, pressure is almost always framed as harm.

Self-care was once a radical act, a survival strategy in systems designed to exhaust us. Now we’re constructing barricades - tall enough to keep pain out, thick enough to keep life from getting in - and call them boundaries as we’re mastering avoidance of hard conversations, heavy feelings, and self-expansion. We’ve confused acceptance of slow progress with contentment for stagnation.

Living is a muscle, and muscles only grow under tension.

Awareness Without Capacity

Knowing your triggers is not the same as managing them. Awareness is cheap. Capacity — the ability to hold tension, discomfort, conflict — is earned.

There is a certain romance to “being in process.” It makes us feel noble, even special. “I’m doing the work” is a reassuring badge to wear — partly because it has no finish line, and it can excuse the quality of the outcome. Conveniently indefinite. But the truth is — if you’re “dealing with” something for years in a row without change, most probably that thing is dealing with you.

David Robson’s research on The Expectation Effect shows that what we believe about our state directly changes its outcome. If we keep reinforcing “I am still broken,” the body and brain adapt to sustain that belief. We don’t just stay in the process — the process stays in us.

You can spend years “processing” something and still be living inside it.
It looks productive—therapy, journaling, retreats—but if nothing changes in how you live, you’re just orbiting the wound.

The real question: Can you sit with your feelings without running?
Can you stay in discomfort without numbing?

Healing is about imperfect endurance, and it comes when insight turns into action—not when you’ve perfectly dissected your pain.

The Wellness Market: How Comfort Became a Commodity

The wellness industry thrives on your insecurity - over $5 trillion globally worth of disconnected people trying to return to their core. And that’s where we’re supposed to be - we are the statistic. Pop-psych oversimplification: let us gather, dear therapists of the internet

Words like trauma, gaslighting, and the ever-trendy narcissistic have become badges of emotional insight — proof we’re woke, aware, and evolved. But sometimes, this language isn’t a bridge to growth; it’s a wall we build to avoid it.

We’ve turned self-love into a performance of labeling and blaming others, sidestepping the harder truth: sometimes, we lack the capacity to make different decisions in time.

Joyce Johnson wrote in Inner Work that “truth without context is just noise.” The bite-sized, shareable therapy advice flooding our feeds lacks the slow burn of lived experience. Without patience and practice, all we end up with is vocabulary — words we know — but no embodiment of real change.

When we aggressively promote emotional intelligence and find comfort in the fact that “we didn’t know any better,” it’s okay to remember that the other person didn’t know either. Polarity of thinking is part of healing, too.

Not anti-therapy, just anti-therapy culture

True healing builds tolerance for reality, not insulation from it.

The propaganda around healing promises safety, serenity, control. But healing — the real kind — is dangerous. It asks you to risk your old identity. To stand in the middle of a storm and discover you can withstand it. To feel more before you feel less. To let discomfort finish its sentence before you cut it off.

The poison is the idea that you can think, plan, or prepare your way out of pain into wholeness. The antidote is showing up — again and again — when the pain doesn’t disappear on schedule, ’cause that’s where the muscle is built.

Healing was never meant to be a home. It’s meant to be a hallway. And you are meant to walk through.
